No Habla Dansk

August 5, 2010 By Sage 6 Comments

Last night I received a letter from the Sprogcenter (language school). I’m trying to enroll in Danish classes, so obviously I can’t speak or read Danish, but the letter is in Danish. I totally get that I’m living in Denmark, and I don’t expect most things to be in English, but I’m really trying to adapt and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the language school to send me a letter in a language I understand.

Anyway, I had to wait until this morning before I could have it translated. I suppose I could’ve used Google translator, but I don’t have a Danish keyboard at home, and what’s a few hours?

The letter is dated August 3 and is informing me that I have an appointment today (August 5) at 1PM to assess my language level. Um, I can tell them without a meeting that I’m definitely a beginner.

I work 30 km away, I don’t have a car and the notice is a bit short considering I’ll need to take the bus that leaves around 11:30, I don’t have a bike today, and I’ll need the afternoon off in order to make this meeting.

I am trying to integrate, but they do not make things easy!

Hang in there sister! I love following your move to Denmark and your stories. Mostly though, I am in LOVE with Opie. When you have time, be sure to update us on the castle in your header…it is beautiful.

Yes, that’s pretty rubbish of the Sprogcenter! It sounds like a test of initiative rather than an appointment letter ;-)

Strange that they sent the letter so close to the appointment day, what if the mail had been delayed?

I’ll bet that the Sprogcenter peeps have just returned from vacaton, thus the short notice to you.

Seems reasonable to expect some attempt to communicate with you in a way that you might understand, such as a letter in Danish and English. I suppose we are spoiled in the US, with Ballots available in dozens of languages. Maybe the Danes are on to something here: assimilate or else.

I hope that you were able to take the rest of the day off after your visit to the Sprogcenter.

    Hi, All…

I’m almost through editing the castle pics. I shot almost 5 GB of photos so editing them has been daunting, but a castle post is coming soon.

Everything about this move has been a test, but I was able to move the appointment to another day :)

“Tak” for reading my blog and for taking the time to comment. It always makes my day to hear from my readers!

    ‘They don’t make it easy’..no, they don’t.

Keep a good sense of humor and you’ll be alright though ;)

Once upon a time, I had the chance to move to the happiest country in the world!

My restless Aries spirit liked that idea, so I did what any girl in my position would do… I grabbed my cat, booked a one-way ticket to Denmark, and became an expat!
