I woke up to a light dusting of snow this morning. I needed a few things from the store, and this photo of winter shopping past came to mind…
This year, my winter shopping transportation looks more like this…
I love my Audrey II every bit as much as I did the day I got her! Sometimes, it really does take going without something to see how much I appreciate it.
At this time last year, the only carpool available to me left at 6:30 am. I was getting up at 4:30 to workout because I knew I’d be too tired to get it in after work. I could’ve taken a later bus, but that would’ve meant a 10 minute bike ride on this end and a 20 minute walk on the other end, with asthma, in all sorts of nasty winter weather. So, I sacrificed sleep to save myself from pneumonia. I was a miserable, sleep deprived shell of myself.
But this year, I leave for and from work on my schedule! A meeting across town isn’t a logistical puzzle. It doesn’t matter that Danish class is several kilometers away and ends 45 minutes before the next bus, and 15 minutes after the last one.
I don’t have to worry about the physics of riding a bike on ice with 15 kilos of cat litter on the back! I can go shopping at the “good” stores, I can go to the spa, I can go treasure hunting at the “far away” secondhand shops, and it doesn’t matter if it’s raining or snowing, or bitter cold! I can wear cute shoes and pretty coats, I can even have a hairstyle ;-)
What a difference a year makes!

That 6:30 car pool sounds cold even from here. Have warm winter weather in NYC and honestly, I love it.

I am happy to hear that you are no longer sleep deprived Sage. You are one tough lady to get up that early every morning! I am sure it is a joy even when you have to clean the car off from snow and ice, rather than riding the bike. :0)

Sage, I love your blog! I truely understand how exited you’re for driving in the terrible Danish weather and don’t have to ride your bike :-)

Sage,
is your car named for Hepburn or little shop of horrors?
supper cute. best regards Charles

Carol: Please send some of that warm weather to Denmark, you’re making me homesick for Connecticut!
Debbie: I’ve never been so happy to scrape ice in my entire life! Truly a joy :)
Thanks, Pernille :)
Charles: I have one of each! I named my bike in homage to Miss Hepburn, then when I got my car, I couldn’t think of a more fitting name than Audrey, so I went the Little Shop of Horrors route. I love having an Audrey, and an Audrey II… and they came to me in the perfect order :)
Thanks for taking the time to let me know you were here!

Hi Sage,
I just found your blog and have spent the past few days reading through it. Thank you for all the great recipes! I have one on deck for tonight. I thought of you this morning during my 1.5 hours-in-a-snowstorm-commute. I figured I didn’t have much to complain about because at least I wasn’t trying to ride a bike in the snow! Thanks for sharing yourself with the world.
Sincerely,
