This year’s birthday destination is Paris! What could be more lovely than five April days in Paris?
Except maybe five April days in Venice, and being a year younger ;-)
This hotel is actually in Amsterdam.
I dreamed I was disappointed because the Eiffel Tower was so much smaller than I’d imagined. I’ve been promised that it will not disappoint, but it’s ok if if does. I’m mostly looking forward to the flea markets, the bakeries, the cafés, and our little rented flat in Montmartre!
Please tell me… If you’ve been to Paris, what’s not to be missed? If you’ve dreamed of Paris, what wouldn’t you miss?
With birthdays like these, I’m almost ok with being an Aries… and another year older.

I love sitting at a table in a pavement cafe, drinking hot chocolate, eating pain au chocolate and people watching. The French women are so stylish, but then they don’t pig out on chocolate! Enjoy Paris xxx

Pere LaChaise cemetery. Which sounds weird but it’s an incredible place! The Louvre. Versailles if you have the chance (the pure oppelance of the place really hits you and you know why there was a French Revolution!) Lots of pâtisseries….The Champs-Élysées…you are in Monmontre so Sacre Coeur is a must. When I was there we found this weird staircase and went up it and found ourselves waaaaay up high outside like near the top of the church with basically nothing between us and oblivion but the views were incredible. BUT I don’t think we were supposed to be up there! I’m terrified of heights but the views were not to be missed. You’re already high up on a hill and then to walk outside….although I don’t think it was allowed. LOL I have a poster of Sacre Coeur on the wall going into my basement (along with maps of Paris and also England and Europe) so I see it every time I walk downstairs. It’s a wonderful walking city; we hardly took the metro since we wanted to see the sites up above. I can’t wait to hear about your trip and see the pictures!

Barbara, maybe you were there a few years ago? We’ve been up Sacre Coeur several times and it’s a legit tour to go up to the tower. It even costs money :) But it’s well-worth it. Much shorter and quicker line (if you get one at all) than Notre Dame, and there’s more of a protected feel up there. Even with height phobia, it’s very manageable. Notre Dame, not so much. I also second the motion of Pere Lachaise cemetery. But be sure to get a good map (don’t use the one in Michelin, which was messed-up). It’s HUGE and very complicated, and if you want to see certain tombs, like Chopin, Oscar Wilde, or Jim Morrison, you absolutely need the map.

I’ve been to Paris a number of times and love it. I also vote for Pere Lachaise, also Musee d’Orsay, Sainte Chapelle and wandering through Ile de la Cite and getting ice cream at Berthillion. That’s the tip of the iceberg, but these are some of my favorites. Where are you staying?

Hilary we were not In tow tower. We were outside it with a small railing. It was very windy up there…..do they give tours of the outside now? We went through this little door and up some weird saris to get there and Lund ourselves outside. It was scary!

Have fun! I went for my 30th birthday (a few years ago) and had a wonderful time. Most of my trip was planned around Monet though – so we even took a day trip out to Giverny, which was beautiful. As for his works, the Musee de l’Orangerie houses his water lily panels and I could have spent all day there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so beautiful.
