Birthdays aren’t a big deal to me, but since moving to Denmark, I’ve set a tradition of not being in Denmark on my birthday. My birthday is coming up sooner than I’d like (it’s a big one!) and it’s time to start planning this year’s getaway.
My top three contenders at the moment are London, Bellagio, and Tuscany. Scroll down for the poll and tell me where you’d go!
London
I love being in London! We already go there quite a bit, and it’s like going home. I long for English products more than American products and I’ve even got a favorite restaurant, favorite shops, and a favorite hotel!
If I choose London, there’s the added bonus of a possible new sparkly thing from London’s best jeweller, and another Louis Vuitton bag. Hey… you only turn “30” once ;-)
Bellagio
Last year, Robert whisked me away to Bellagio, proposed to me overlooking Lake Como, and arranged a cooking class on my birthday. That’s going to be pretty hard to beat, so I won’t even try.
Bellagio is the most romantic place I’ve ever been. So many times, I’ve relived the memories of our days wandering around the old cobblestone streets, sipping wine against a spectacular view, and just quietly being together in one of the most beautiful places on earth. This is the stuff I daydream about!
Tuscany
What can I say? I love Italy… and we love Italian wine! I once spent a few days in Siena and have always wanted to see more of Tuscany.
A day or two in Florence followed by a few days at a cozy agriturismo in the Chianti region could be just the thing to scratch that itch. Maybe Robert could even take one of those lame photos of me holding up the tower of Pisa!
Somewhere else?
Where would you go? Vote in the poll and tell me in the comments. This poll will be open until March 13.
P.S. I have no idea how to fix the wonky alignment on the voting buttons, but since there are only four choices, I’m sure you can follow ;-)

Turning 30 is a HUGE deal (even if you don’t really even celebrate birthdays). 30 should get it’s own city, a place that you have never been before.
Geoff says
New. York. City. It’s time.
Andrea says
Hmmmm, how many nights?
Sage says
Somewhere between 5 & 7 :)

Even though it’s a big b’day, you’re thinking familiar/sort of low key v. totally new – I realize you still have a honeymoon in the wings. :) Still, if you choose one of the familiar, plan to see something that’s iconic to you – performance at a special theater, or museum or… – followed by vino/cocktails and/or a cozy meal.
i.e. I drove hours to see Baryshnikov dance in one of his modern, post-ballet projects, will never forget my first trip to MOMA – seeing Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and other paintings for the first time in person, or a whirlwind Smithsonian week in D.C. You get the idea. :)
Otherwise, I would say it’s a iconic birthday, and I’d like to see through your eyes and palate something like Sage’s Frugalista Glam BB (Big B’day) tooling the Cote d’Azur to the French Riviera, or kicking back on the Orient Express (sipping Guilty 12 cocktails). That said, there is a lower key UK countryside version via Belmond (dot) com out of London.
So, there you have it… more than you bargained for, no doubt. ;)

I love your suggestions!
I’ve been through many options… for awhile, I was bent on going to the Greek Isles or on a Mediterranean Cruise, or staying at an ultra luxury resort in Sharm El Sheikh, but we still have the honeymoon to consider and if I did one of those for my birthday, then how would we ever find a suitable honeymoon?
The other issue is that it’s not easy to get out of rural Denmark, so many of the places I’d like to go require multiple stopovers and a travel time of close to 24 hours!
At the risk of sounding like a spoiled brat, I’m burned out on city breaks. I had a nice time in Athens, but I just cannot get into the idea of yet another European city! First world problems :)
But I think those three reasons are why I’ve narrowed it down to the three familiars. I do like your idea of seeing something iconic to me and if I end up going with one of those options, I’ll definitely heed your advice.
I’m stuck between not wanting to upstage the honeymoon and not wanting this of all birthdays to be lame!

I’ve recently been looking into Ireland (the northeast part of the country) but I am a quiet, country-setting, big on nature kind of person and you seem to be more of a city girl so not sure somewhere like Sligo would appeal to you…
Sage says
You get me… I’m not much of a nature girl. However, I do love beautiful scenery and Ireland is on my short list of destinations, but not for this trip.

Based on your choices and the additional info in the comments section, I vote for Tuscany. While you’ve visited Tuscany and know you love it, there are so many places in the area left to explore. I can’t see how you can go wrong, with Tuscany.
Sage says
I’m very close to making a decision… stay tuned :)
