Not too long ago, I posted a poll asking where I should celebrate my birthday, you guys really wanted me to go to Tuscany! And I thought I did, too, but when I started planning the trip, it just wasn’t fun. My past three birthdays have dawned in Venice, Paris, and Bellagio. I’ve been to Rome twice and I love Italy, but I wasn’t feeling it this year. Maybe it’s because last year was so ridiculously perfect.
Honestly, I’m burned out on Italy, and city breaks, and I need something different. Yeah, I know… first world, poor little rich girl problems, I’ll cry you a river, don’t worry ;-)
Robert said, “the world is your oyster, darling” so I started dreaming of more exotic places. You can’t really get to Bora Bora from here, so I had to keep it a bit closer to home. I found the best resort ever in Sharm El Sheikh, but it may as well have been in Bora Bora because the only flight out of here arrives at like 1:30 in the morning and departs at 2:45 in the morning.
I hate living in Jutland! The only way to escape this place is to take another city break on a budget airline, take a dreaded charter trip to an all inclusive resort with a bunch of Danes, or spend three hours on the train and fly out of Copenhagen. All of those options pretty much suck.
So, I’m going to London *sigh*. At least I won’t be in Denmark on my birthday, I refuse to ever be in Denmark on my birthday. It’s just too depressing having a desk full of Danish flags and having to buy cake for everyone, even though I don’t eat cake!
I’m sure London will be great! I’ll get to speak English without shame, Robert and I can scope out future neighborhoods, we’ll go Chinatown and maybe see a show, I’ll eat salt & vinegar crisps, Robert will eat scotch eggs, we’ll see our parents, we’ll shop, and we’ll restock our pantry.
I really do love London and it feels like going home, but I wanted something special this year. I’ve always prioritized experiences over things, but this year it looks like I’ll have to buy my something special… I hope Hatton Garden or my favorite purveyor of hangbags and luggage comes through.
As a consolation prize, Robert and I have booked an early summer cruise to the Norwegian Fjords!
I cruised the Fjords on my own, in steerage a few years ago, but this time I’ll be sailing for longer and in a balcony cabin with my Prince Charming :)

I have always wanted to go to London. I usually like to spend my birthday at home with the people I love.

London is one of my favorite cities! How lucky I am to have a husband who comes from there and still has family in the area, I could not have planned things better if I tried :)

Now that’s a great way to spend your birthday. I love their accents over there too so sexy in the men lol

That’s one of the reasons I married one of their countrymen ;-) I never get tired of listening to Robert, it’s a dream come true for this girl who used to watch C-Span just to hear Tony Blair!

I usually spend my birthday on a trip, too – the experience in a different place is a gift that I give to myself. I’m glad that you’ve decided where to go and I’m sure it will be memorable and fun. Take lots of pictures and enjoy!

I love this post. I always try and go away for my birthday too. Being from England I think we take our country for granted but there really are some beautiful parts. I would love to go to the fjords one day too!

What! London will be great – don’t sigh over that! It’s still a destination and think of the positives! :)

First of all, happy birthday! I don’t get to travel much except on occasion here in the U.S. I’m sure where ever you go, you will enjoy your birthday and have great memories to reflect on later.

Like I said, poor little rich girl ;-)
Seriously though, we go to Italy like Americans go to Florida. It’s not so exotic anymore.

i hope you have a wonderful trip! i LOVE italy.. and it’s the one country I keep going back to. London was not my city.. and we didn’t have a great time on our visit.. but I’m sure everyone has a different experience.
Sage says
Thanks :)
I kind of had to talk myself out of going to Italy again. I love Italy, but when you go somewhere too many times, it loses its allure.
I understand about London not being your city. Paris wasn’t my city, and people think I’m crazy for that, but like you said, everyone has a different experience. I will go back to Paris at some point, and maybe I’ll love it… or maybe it’s just not for me.

After living in a foreign country, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to travel to an English-speaking country. It’s heaven!

London is my husband’s favorite place to travel. He feels at home there, which makes me laugh since he’s def. an American through and through. :) I do like to visit there too. :)
Sage says
I love London because it’s familiar enough to be comfortable yet different enough to be foreign.
I’d been living abroad for over 3 years when I met my husband and after dating REALLY foreign men, it was such a relief to have found him. He’s culturally similar, but just different enough to be exotic… and that accent! OMG <3
Carmy says
That view looks amazing! Would love to hide out there for a while away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
