Once upon a time, I was offered a promotion if I took a relo package. And so, I moved to rural Denmark. It wasn’t the most exciting destination, but my restless Aries spirit couldn’t pass up the opportunity to move abroad and live in the world’s happiest country at least for a few years. So I did what any girl in my position would do…
I packed all of my favorite things into a shipping container, bribed my faithful companion Opie into a crate, and left my simple life in Connecticut for Denmark. I bought a wonky old apartment, painted the walls crazy colors, hung chandeliers in unorthodox places, and filled it with fabulous vintage things. It was my eclectic and glamorous muse!
Denmark wasn’t what I expected, but I chose happiness and made the best of it. I used my six weeks paid holiday to travel like there was no tomorrow. I went to Tuscany and Venice, Krakow and Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, London, and Rome… I visited beaches and temples in Asia and took a cooking class in Chiang Mai!
However, I was becoming a woman of a certain age who lived alone with a cat. So, I joined an online dating site, which quickly revealed that I’m culturally incompatible with Danish men, so I decided to only date expats. I didn’t get many dates, but I wasn’t willing to settle and eventually, as I was getting my ducks in a row to leave Denmark, I met Robert… professor, doctor, sexy Englishman.
After ten months of proper British courtship, Robert took me to Bellagio for my birthday and with Lake Como behind him, he got down on one knee, offered me an antique Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring, and asked me (in that irresistible English accent) to be his wife. How could I refuse?
We came back to Denmark and I sold my beautiful wonky apartment and most of my vintage things. And I left that small, not so fabulous town for Robert’s white, functionalist apartment in Denmark’s second city, Aarhus.
Before long, we eloped to Gibraltar and I became his Yoko Ono!
Since then, my life has gotten a lot less simple and a lot more glamorous! I’ve quit the job that brought me here and I’ve found my calling as a freelance copywriter and editor. (Psst… I’m available for freelance copywriting and editing gigs. You can read a bit more here.)
Now, Robert and I
are hunting for have found our dream home here in Aarhus Denmark, the happiest city in the world, and the 2017 European Capital of Culture! It’s big city centre apartment from 1899 and we’re in the middle of the project from hell restoring it.
Read along as I document our restoration project, our travels, our lives as expats in a third country, and share the occasional vegetarian recipe.
